The 50 Best Footballers Alive

If he were gone tomorrow, how many players in the world do this exact job — not a similar one? Volume is secondary to how rare the function is.

What level appears against the best teams, in the games that end seasons? Football that only works when the other side allows it does not move a player up this page.

How much of the team actually runs through him? Take him out and the side should look worse in a way a spectator can see. A strong passenger on a stacked roster sits below the player the side is built around.

New league, new manager, new teammates. A player who only works in one setup is worth less than a player who makes the setup work. Moves that have already happened count. Comfort that has never been tested does not.

What he is this year, not what he was or might become. Reputation can support a placement. It cannot finish one. Age only matters when it shows up on the pitch.
