Forty teams by 2040: the framework, the eight markets, the candidates beyond them, the former brands, and the money.
Structure
The league lands at forty franchises split into two twenty-team conferences, with each conference divided into two ten-team divisions. That makes four divisions in total: Pacific and Central in the West, Atlantic and Metropolitan in the East. It's cleaner than eight five-team pods. Ten teams is enough to build a divisional identity and a stable schedule without creating eight separate races that start to feel arbitrary by February.
The 82-game schedule stays, weighted toward divisional and intra-conference play. You see your nine division rivals repeatedly, pick up the other ten teams in your conference on a rotating basis, and treat cross-conference games as events, closer to MLB interleague play than a nightly coast-to-coast grind. The Stanley Cup Final remains East versus West every June.
The current league already sits at sixteen teams per conference. Adding four in the East and four in the West moves no existing franchise out of its conference. Detroit stays in the East.
The eight new teams
West: Houston, Phoenix, New Orleans, Saskatchewan.
East: Quebec City, Atlanta, Baltimore, Cleveland.
Realignment
Adding Quebec, Baltimore, Atlanta, and Cleveland in the East and Houston, New Orleans, Phoenix, and Saskatchewan in the West yields twenty teams per conference. Detroit stays in the Atlantic with Boston, the New York teams, and the Canadian footprint. The new markets are in bold.
Western Conference
Pacific Division: Vancouver, Seattle, Calgary, Edmonton, San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Vegas, Utah, Phoenix.
Central Division: Winnipeg, Minnesota, Saskatchewan, Colorado, Chicago, St. Louis, Dallas, Houston, Nashville, New Orleans.
The Pacific covers the coast, Alberta, and the desert markets. The Central holds the prairie, the Midwest, Texas, and the Gulf, with Saskatchewan alongside Winnipeg and Minnesota, Houston paired with Dallas, and New Orleans anchoring the south.
Eastern Conference
Atlantic Division: Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec City, Buffalo, Boston, Detroit, NY Rangers, NY Islanders, New Jersey.
Metropolitan Division: Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Carolina, Washington, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Florida.
The Atlantic is Canada, Boston, Detroit, and the New York metro. The Metropolitan runs from the rust belt through the southeast: Cleveland through Philadelphia across the mid-Atlantic, then Atlanta back in with Carolina, Washington, Tampa, and Florida.
Playoffs
Sixteen teams make the postseason. The top four in each division qualify, with no wild-card gymnastics and no debate over whether the fourth-place team in a weak division deserved it more than the fifth-place team in a strong one. Division races stay live from October through March because finishing fourth still means something.
Once the sixteen are set, the bracket opens up within each conference. The eight qualifiers are re-ranked one through eight by regular-season points, and division affiliation stops mattering from that point on. One plays eight, two plays seven, three plays six, and four plays five. A Pacific team can draw a Central opponent in the first round if that is how the standings shake out, and the same applies between the Atlantic and the Metropolitan in the East. Divisional qualification keeps every market engaged, while conference re-seeding makes sure the bracket reflects the season the teams actually played instead of forcing the second- and third-best teams in a conference into an early meeting because they happened to share a division.
The conference champions meet in the Stanley Cup Final. Sixteen teams in, eight per side, re-seeded one through eight, and East versus West at the end.
